Tocon is a small village in the province of Granada, Andalucia in southern Spain, it has a population of around 1500 and is at an elevation 568 Metres.
Tocon is a quiet village and in fact in the surrounding villages of which there are many, Tocon is well known for being a very relaxed and laid back place. Even though it is only small Tocon has it's own bank along with 3 small supermarkets, a fish monger and 2 bakers who travel the village every day delivering their goods and 6 other shops, as well as 7 bars and 1 discotheque. The people of Tocon are very friendly and have welcomed us into their village and are only too happy to offer help of any kind should it be needed.
As most people know Spain is renowned for it's fiestas and Tocon is no exception, the first of the year, fiesta San Marko, is at the end of April and is held in the fiesta field along the side of the river. It is a day of music, eating and drinking with all the village inhabitants. The main fiesta is in the month of July when at the start of the fiesta the Statue of the Virgin De Siccoro is brought out of the church and paraded round the village. The fiesta continues for 4 days with various events organised throughout the day and then at night the village is closed to traffic and all the bars come out onto the street, there is a stage area which is set up on the Plazza, the remainder of the area is filled with tables and chairs and there is a different band every night, this entertainment continues well into the early hours of the following morning. People come to the village from all of the surrounding villages to the fiesta as do the people of Tocon to the other villages, as the fiesta's might only go on for 4 days but one of the next villages will be starting their fiesta on the next Saturday. This means we have over a month of fiesta's when you take into account that we all travel to the other villages.
From our studio in Tocon we have some fantastic
views the best one of which is of the Sierra
Nevada mountains which is covered in snow
usualy from November untill March
And for those who tell you it's always
sunny in Spain this is what we woke up
to on Sunday January 29th 2006.
On the left the view from our front door
and on the right our sun loungers on the
patio, yes it does snow in Spain.
But it had all gone by lunch time
and the sun came out to play.
